Butcher’s Assistant

We’re looking for a reliable and friendly person to join our small team at our whānau-owned butcher shop, Top Cut Butchery in Raglan.

This is a varied, hands-on role working across both the butchery and customer-facing sides of the shop. You’ll assist our butchers with day-to-day production and preparation, while also playing an important role in serving our customers, preparing orders, keeping displays stocked and helping with the general running of the shop.

Customer service is a big part of what we do, so we’re looking for someone who is approachable, confident talking with people and takes pride in giving customers friendly and helpful service.

Butchery qualifications or previous experience are an advantage, but aren’t necessarily essential for the right person. You will need to be practical, confident and willing to learn, as the role will involve handling knives and, once properly trained, safely operating butchery machinery from time to time.

Job description

As a Butcher’s Assistant / Shop Assistant, you’ll work across different areas of the shop depending on what needs doing that day.

Customer service will be a key part of your role. You’ll regularly be serving customers at the counter, helping them with what they’re looking for, taking and preparing orders and making sure they leave with a positive experience. You’ll also help keep our displays full, tidy and well presented throughout the day.

Alongside this, you’ll work with our butchers and assist with day-to-day production. This could include sausage and meat patty production, preparing pet food, packing and preparing meat, weighing and labelling products, preparing customer orders, helping with smoked products and learning basic knife and machinery skills as your experience and confidence develop.

You’ll also help with restocking, receiving deliveries, cleaning equipment and work areas, and maintaining the high food-safety and hygiene standards expected in a working butcher shop.

As a small team, flexibility and teamwork are important to us. Everyone contributes across different areas of the shop when required, particularly during our busiest periods. Our holiday seasons, especially Christmas and New Year, are an important and busy time for the business, so availability and reliability during these periods will be an important part of the role.

The opportunity

This role would suit someone who enjoys working with people but also wants something more hands-on and varied than a standard retail position.

You’ll get to know our regular customers, work alongside experienced butchers and have the opportunity to learn useful butchery and production skills along the way.

For the right person, there’s plenty of opportunity to develop your skills, become more involved in the butchery side of the business and grow into a trusted and valued member of the team.

Requirements

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly, approachable and confident dealing with customers
  • Able to provide helpful and genuine customer service
  • Reliable, punctual and willing to work
  • Practical and comfortable working with their hands
  • Willing and capable of learning safe knife skills and machinery use
  • Comfortable handling raw meat and food products
  • Able to follow instructions and food-safety procedures
  • Happy to help with cleaning and the less glamorous parts of the job
  • Able to work independently once trained
  • Willing to learn new skills and take on more responsibility as their confidence grows
  • Flexible and willing to help with additional hours during busy and holiday periods when required

Previous butchery, food production, retail or hospitality experience would be an advantage, but attitude, reliability, customer service and practical ability will be important when choosing the right person.
