Butcher’s Assistant

We’re looking for a reliable and friendly person to join our small team on a casual basis at our whānau-owned butcher shop, Top Cut Butchery in Raglan.

Previous work or butchery experience is an advantage, but it isn’t essential for the right person. This role could equally suit someone straight out of school looking to gain their first real work experience, or someone with previous experience looking for flexible casual work.

This is a varied, hands-on role working across both the butchery and customer-facing sides of the shop. You’ll help with day-to-day production and preparation while also playing an important role in serving customers, preparing orders, keeping displays stocked and helping with the general running of the shop.

Customer service is a big part of what we do, so we’re looking for someone who is approachable, willing to talk with people and takes pride in giving customers friendly and helpful service.

The amount of work available will vary throughout the year with the seasonal nature of our business. During our busy summer and holiday periods there can be plenty of hours available, including five or six-day working weeks at times. During the quieter off-season, particularly through winter, hours may reduce depending on customer demand and the needs of the business.

What matters most is that you’re reliable, willing to learn, comfortable getting stuck in and have a good attitude towards work.

Job description

As a Butcher’s Assistant / Shop Assistant, you’ll work across different areas of the shop depending on what needs doing.

Customer service will be a key part of your role. You’ll regularly serve customers at the counter, help them with what they’re looking for, take and prepare orders and help keep our displays full, tidy and well presented.

You’ll also assist with production and preparation. This could include sausage and meat patty production, preparing pet food, packing and preparing meat, weighing and labelling products, preparing customer orders and helping with smoked products.

As your skills and confidence develop, there will also be opportunities to learn more practical aspects of working in a butcher shop. This may include learning basic knife skills and, once properly trained, the safe and confident use of appropriate butchery machinery.

You’ll also help with restocking, receiving deliveries, cleaning equipment and work areas, and maintaining the high food-safety and hygiene standards expected in a working butcher shop.

As part of a small team, the work can change throughout the day depending on customer demand, production requirements and what needs doing around the shop. We don’t expect someone starting out to know everything from day one — but we do expect a willingness to listen, learn, ask questions and gradually become confident taking on different jobs.

Our summer and holiday seasons, particularly Christmas and New Year, are some of our busiest periods, so good availability during these times will be important.

Requirements

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Friendly, approachable and willing to engage with customers
  • Able to provide friendly and helpful customer service
  • Reliable, punctual and committed to the shifts they accept
  • Keen to work and learn new skills
  • Comfortable working as part of a small team
  • Practical and willing to work with their hands
  • Comfortable handling raw meat and food products
  • Willing to learn safe knife skills and machinery use when ready
  • Able to listen to instructions and follow food-safety procedures
  • Happy to help with cleaning and the everyday jobs involved in running the shop
  • Willing to build confidence and take on more responsibility as they gain experience
  • Flexible with their availability, particularly during busy and holiday periods
  • Comfortable with the seasonal nature of the role, where the amount of work available may vary throughout the year

Previous butchery, food production, retail or hospitality experience would certainly be useful, but a lack of previous experience won’t rule you out. For someone starting their working life, reliability, attitude and willingness to learn will matter much more to us than having an impressive CV.
